Equipment & Yard Access

Helpful information about stump grinding equipment, gates, fenced yards, and property access.

Can stump grinding equipment access your yard?

Many stump grinding jobs are straightforward, but access matters. Fences, gates, slopes, soft ground, landscaping, stairs, and narrow side yards can all affect how the job is handled.

Sending photos of the stump and the access path is the fastest way to find out what is possible.

Equipment Information

Yerkes Stump Grinding uses professional stump grinding equipment designed to grind stumps efficiently while keeping the job as contained as possible.

Machine Type Bandit SG-40, as well as other machines we may rent or borrow to suit larger jobs
Minimum Gate Width About 30 inches
Grinding Depth Up to 12 inches, but most request just under ground level
Best Access Surface Driveway, lawn, dirt, gravel, and most normal yard access areas may be workable depending on conditions.

Backyards and Fenced Areas

Stumps in fenced yards can often be ground if there is enough room to get the machine to the stump. Gate width, turns, steps, slopes, and tight corners can all matter.

Before scheduling, check:

  • Gate width
  • Distance from parking area to stump
  • Whether there are stairs or steep slopes
  • Whether the ground is very wet or soft
  • Nearby fences, walls, sheds, gardens, or landscaping
  • Low branches or obstacles near the stump

Will stump grinding damage the lawn?

Stump grinding is usually much less disruptive than digging out a stump, but every yard is different. There may be some disturbance from the machine, wood chips, or the grinding area itself.

Wet ground, steep slopes, soft soil, or tight access paths may increase the chance of lawn marks. Yerkes Stump Grinding will review access conditions before the job whenever possible.

Stumps Near Fences, Houses, or Landscaping

Stumps near fences, buildings, sidewalks, gardens, or other obstacles may still be possible to grind, depending on the space around the stump.

Any obstacle that either you or the onsite crew are concerned about will be discussed during the quoting process.

Underground Utilities and Safety

Customers should identify sprinkler lines, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting wires, underground utilities, septic components, or anything else buried near the stump before work begins.

If there is any suspicion that there is any sort of line under or near the site, it will be discussed during the quoting process, any calls to 811 needed will be made.

Photos That Help With Access Questions

For the fastest answer, send photos showing:

  • The stump from a few angles
  • A close-up showing the stump diameter
  • The gate or access path
  • Any nearby fence, wall, structure, or landscaping
  • The route from the driveway or street to the stump
